Cardinal Watercolor

My great aunt was visiting from Europe, and I painted this as a parting gift for her. She loved it!

JRR Cover: Eagle Owl

This was a very exciting project for me, and I'm happy to finally share it with you all. It involves two of my favorite things: birds and science. I was fortunate to meet the editor of the Journal of Raptor Research, and I was charged with painting one of their upcoming covers! The painting itself was also an experiment, a twist on an old technique I wanted to try.

First I did the line drawing, and then inked all the darkest values of the painting. After, I used a dark (but not black) wash to add the next-darkest values. I also quickly painted in a base-layer for the eye.

Here I (finally) finished the barring on the head feathers, and added the dark shadow on the eye:

Using two or three lighter mixes, I finished the value pattern and adjusted the local colors a little. I added a messy, wet color into the background.

Switching to acrylic paint, I brushed over a very thin layer of a light, warm brown to get the local color of the bird better. I also painted this over the background, neutralizing it quite a bit, and for the better. Then I sprayed it with a workable fixative, and went to town with colored pencils: adding texture, tweaking color, and smoothing out values where it was needed.

I am really happy with how this piece turned out, and, just as importantly, the cover looks great, too! Finally got my copies in the mail:

Sketchbook Dump

I can't believe it's been a month since I posted. I'm working on a few pieces I can't really share online right now, so here's a sketchbook dump to tide you over until I can start working on Diamond again.

I also have artwork up in the Grimsby Public Art Gallery's Biannual Juried Exhibition, on from Aug 6th - Sept 11 2016. It's a really lovely little gallery, go have a look if you're in town!

I love catbirds.

Connor mauling his playset. He doesn't move around much, but he switches his leg positions all the time.

More Bali, because she's very photogenic.

Diamond WIP: Part One

Started my second coloured pencil piece of the year. Just like my latest, Humble Jewel IV, I'm using the Mi-Teintes artboard, this time one in an Eggshell colour. I wanted a dark, stroke-less background for the pale bird, so I decided to use a Storm Graphtint pencil to lay in a dark base layer.

The pencil was almost-new when I started.

Once I had the base-layered coloured-in as dark as I wanted it, I started to wet the pencil layer using various-sized brushes. Then, before it could dry completely, I sprayed it with water in a few places and either dabbed it dry, or used an almost-dry flat to take the pale areas off. I'm pretty pleased with it so far!

Sketchbook Dump

Did some live gestures in my sketchbook every day last week (the last page is not posted because it sucked).

Exhibition Update

Working on something right now that is going to stay under wraps until it's finished, so in lieu of WIP updates, here's some pics of places my artwork is currently hanging. April was a busy, busy month!

My painting, Chipper Chirper, won first place in the Adult Fine Art Catagory at the Niagara Falls Art Show on April 3rd. After the show, the winners were all taken and put up in City Hall, where they will remain until the end of May 2016.

Niagara Falls City Hall: 4310 Queen St, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6X5, 2nd floor.

A little later, my artwork went up in the Cat Adoption Centre of the Niagara Falls Humane Society as part of the Art for Animals Niagara charity group. These particular pieces should be up for a few months:

Niagara Square: 7555 Montrose Rd, Niagara Falls, ON L2H 2E9

And at the end of the month, Art for Animals Niagara also put up artwork in the Welland Civic Center, near the library entrance. That artwork will be up until the end of June. A portion of proceeds from all Art for Animals Niagara Sales from either location goes to charity!

Welland Civic Centre: 60 E Main St, Welland, ON L3B 3X4

Lots of opportunity to go see my artwork in person if you're in the area!
